What is Pelli Choopulu?
పెళ్లి చూపులుpronounced PEL-li CHOO-pu-lu
Pelli choopulu (పెళ్లి చూపులు, literally 'marriage viewing') is the arranged-marriage meeting where families formally assess a match: the prospective couple, both sets of parents, an aunt or three with veto power, and a coffee table groaning with snacks nobody quite relaxes enough to enjoy. Bharatanatyam certificates may be mentioned. Salaries will be approximated upward.
The couple is eventually granted ten supervised minutes of conversation — on which basis, somehow, generations of marriages have launched. The ritual survives in modern form (video calls, matrimony-site filters), but the choreography is eternal: everyone performing casualness, nobody achieving it.
Why Pelli Choopulu matters in Telugu culture
Pelli choopulu is peak Telugu social theater — comedy, tension, and tenderness in one living room, which is why Tollywood keeps making films about it (including one literally titled Pelli Choopulu). Every Telugu family has at least one legendary pelli choopulu story.
